You can change your preferred language in Chrome. Chrome can also translate pages for you.

Change the language of Chrome

You can choose the default language of your Chrome app's menus and settings.

  1. On your Android device, openChromeChange Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (1).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (2)Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (3) Settings Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (4) Languages.
  3. Under “Chrome’s language,” tap the current language.
  4. From the language list, select the language you want.
  5. After the language downloads, in the toolbar, tap Restart.
    • The download is complete when you find “Language ready” under your new language.

Translate webpages in Chrome

When you come across a page written in a language you don't understand, use Chrome to translate the page into the language you want.

  1. On your Android device, open ChromeChange Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (5).
  2. Go to a webpage written in another language.
  3. In the notification at the top of the screen, tap the language that you want to translate the page to.
    • To change the default language:
      1. Tap Settings Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (6) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (7)More languages.
      2. Select the language.
    • To always translate pages in this language, tap Settings Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (8) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (9) Always translate pages in [language].

Not working? Try refreshing the webpage. If you still can't tapTranslate, the language might not be available for translation.

If you don’t find aTranslate notification at the top of your screen, you can request a translation.

  1. On your Android device, open ChromeChange Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (10).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap MoreChange Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (11)Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (12)Translate...

Tip: If you want to translate a language from your list, tap the language and select Offer to translate.

Translate selected text

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (13).
  2. Go to a webpage written in another language.
  3. Highlight the text that you want to translate.
  4. At the bottom, a translation of that word or phrase will appear.
  5. To get more information, tap the translation.

Tip: To play back text in a text-to-speech supported language, tap Listen Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (14).

Change your default page translation settings

By default, Chrome offers to translate pages written in a language you don't understand.

Change your default language

Select the language Chrome will translate the page into.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome appChange Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (15) .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (16)Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (17)Settings.
  3. Tap Languages Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (18)Advanced Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (19).
  4. Tap Translate into this language.
  5. From the language list, select the language you want.

Add all the languages you know

Pages in more than one language show your preferred language first.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (20).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (21) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (22) Settings Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (23) Languages.
  3. Under "Content languages," tap Add language.
  4. Tap the language you want to add.
  5. To reorder languages, drag them to the place you want.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (24) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (25) Remove.

Turn translation on or off

You can control when Chrome offers to translate pages.

To turn all translations for all pages on or off:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (26).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (27) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (28)Settings.
  3. Tap Languages.
  4. Under "Translation settings," turn on or off Offer to send pages in other languages to Google translate.

Manage "never translate" language list

Control which languages Chrome won't offer to translate.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (29).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (30) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (31) Settings.
  3. Tap Languages Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (32) Advanced Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (33).
  4. Tap Don’t offer to translate these languages.
  5. To add a language, tap Add language Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (34) and select the language to never translate.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (35) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (36) Remove.

Manage "always translate" language list

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (37).
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (38) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (39) Settings.
  3. Tap Languages Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (40) Advanced Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (41).
  4. Tap Automatically translate these languages.
  5. To add a language, tap Add language Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (42) and select the language to always translate.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (43) Change Chrome languages and translate webpages - Android (44) Remove.
