The Best Hot Chocolate Mix You'll Ever Make- Crave The Good (2024)

Get rid of that store-bought hot chocolate mix, and make your own! Not only is it incredibly easy, but it’s also soooooo delicious. This homemade hot chocolate mix makes great gifts too!

Kevy set aside time last summer to build our kids an epic toboggan hill. He carved it right out of the hill and it’s amazing!

As part of their Christmas gifts, we got our kids a fleet of commercial tube park tubes and an awesome lighting set up so the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.

Needless to say, ALL the kids from our cohort (including the big kids: Kevy + the dads) have been out sliding most days, and some nights. Also, probably, needless to say, I got tired of going through so much hot chocolate mix.

I decided to give my favorite little crew some epic hot chocolate to warm up with once they get off the epic hill… Nailed it!

This hot chocolate mix recipe is dedicated to sliding the days away.

💡Tips + Tricks

No. 1 –> I love making hot cocoa with whole milk so it’s extra creamy. Don’t forget to top the hot chocolate with your homemade dehydrated marshmallows!

No. 2 –> When whipping up a cup of hot chocolate, I like to add the powder first, then a bit of the hot milk and whisk until completely combined, before whisking in the remaining liquid, this prevents floating hot chocolate bombs.

No. 3 –> Speaking of hot chocolate bombs, this hot cocoa mix would make the best filling for your homemade hot chocolate bombs!

No. 4 –> This recipe as written is silky, smooth, creamy, and slightly bitter. If you prefer a sweeter chocolate flavor, simply add more powdered sugar. Test your batch right while it’s in the food processor stage to prevent clean up, then re-mess!

🗝 Key Ingredients

Cocoa Powder: Use a high quality dutch process cocoa powder for this recipe if you can get your hands on it! This type of cocoa powder is washed with an alkaline solution which makes it mellower in flavour, darker in colour, and more easily dissolved in liquids! Regular unsweetened cocoa will also work, but my preference is dutched cocoa.

White chocolate chips: Blending up white chocolate chips in this hot cocoa mix makes it extra creamy and totally delicious. You can skip them, but you’ll regret it!

Sugar: Sugar’s role in this recipe is aimed at cutting the richness of the cocoa while adding a sweetness that’s not overpowering.

Cornstarch: This one seems odd, till you consider it… Cornstarch helps the mix to avoid clumping, but it’s also activated in hot water and will help to thicken the hot chocolate for a richer mouthfeel.

Is it hot chocolate or hot cocoa?

Generally, hot cocoa is made with cocoa powder and sweeteners, while hot chocolate is made with shredded chocolate and less or no sweetener. Hot cocoa is usually thinner and more sweet while hot chocolate is thicker and more chocolatey.

This recipe is kind of a hybrid. It combines a standard hot cocoa mix with the white chocolate to make a delicious hot cocoalate? hot chocoa? Either way, it’s easy homemade and yummy! Make it!

Recommended Equipment

Food Processor: I have a Cuisinart food processor that is probably 10 years old, and it’s a total workhorse! This unit is perfect for mixing homemade hot cocoa mix. I prefer to use it to my Vitamix only because my Vitamix is almost too powerful for powdered things like this and tends to compress the powder in the corners.

Mason Jars: I have a total love affair with mason jars. They’re good for everything. Drinking out of, cooking in, storage and even gifting. They’re reusable and they’re environmentally friendly. The jars in these photos are a mix of vintage ones I’ve collected over the years and re-used jars from store-bought sauces.
